News & Reports: FedEx in the Piedmont Triad

FedEx is the world's largest express transportation company, providing fast and reliable delivery to more than 220 countries and territories. FedEx uses a global air-and-ground network to speed delivery of time-sensitive shipments.

FedEx chose the Piedmont Triad region for its one-million-square foot Mid-Atlantic Hub (which opened in June 2009) and its 400,000-square foot southeast ground sorting facility (which is under construction and will open in 2011).

Business advantages of locating within an hour’s drive of the FedEx Hub include the ability to meet higher customer demand with greater shipping flexibility. The hub provides a focus on supply chain optimization with a later drop-off time and the ability to ship to and from a variety of domestic or worldwide locations.

FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub

The FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub is located three miles from the High Point city limits on the grounds of Piedmont Triad International Airport. It is the carrier’s fifth major U.S. hub, serving destinations around the world. Packages originating on the East Coast for East Coast delivery will be handled through the Piedmont Triad hub. Other FedEx hubs are located in Memphis, Indianapolis, Anchorage and Fort Worth.

The first phase now in operation moved local FedEx ramp operations into 500,000sf of the new one-million-square foot facility in June 2009. Sixty-five flights per week are operating out of the new $300 million hub.

Full regional hub operations are slated to begin later as the national economy improves. The sorting equipment is installed with the capacity to sort 24,000 packages per hour. An additional 75 – 100 flights per week will be added.

An economic impact study estimated that, over a 16-year period, the FedEx Mid-Atlantic Hub will create 19,800 jobs and have a total value-added impact of $9.3 billion on the Piedmont Triad’s economy. It is anticipated that $703 million in new state tax revenues and $236 million in new local tax revenues could be generated during that time frame.

Following the examples of other FedEx hubs in the country, a host of companies with distribution needs are expected to open operations in High Point and surrounding communities.

FedEx Ground

FedEx Ground began construction in November 2008 on a new $100 million southeast sorting facility in Kernersville, in Guilford County. FedEx purchased the 125-acre site along I-40 just north of the High Point city limits.

The City of High Point will be providing utilities to FedEx Ground.

The 400,000-square foot facility capable of sorting 45,000 packages per hour at full build out will open in 2011 with approximately 500 employees – 350 moving from two regional locations and 150 jobs being newly-created. More than 120 contractor jobs will also be created for the operation.
